We’ve all experienced that moment of dread when a drain gets clogged. There’s that telltale gurgle, water starts backing up, and all you can do is pray that nothing awful comes out of the drain. And once you get a clog, how do you get it cleared so you can continue on with your day?

There are a few tried-and-true tricks that can help you clear a blocked drain. Read on to learn more about these and how you can stop these clogs before they ever get started.

    1. Prevention

When it comes to clearing drains, the old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” holds true. If at all possible, avoid putting items that could clog your drain down the sink. This includes cooking oil, coffee grounds, onion skins, potato skins, meat scraps, hair, cat litter, and oil-based makeup products.

    2. Baking Soda and Vinegar

If your drain does get clogged, one tried-and-true method for clearing your drain is using baking soda and vinegar. Pour a generous amount of baking soda (about a cup) down your drain, and follow it up with a cup of distilled white vinegar. Follow up with hot water after ten minutes, and repeat as needed.

    3. Boiling Water

In some cases, hot water on its own can help to clear a clog in your drain. This is particularly true of oil-based clogs, such as from makeup or cooking oil. Pour a few cups of boiling water slowly down your drain, and allow it time to run through before repeating, if necessary.

    4. Snake

If none of these methods are working to clear your drain, you can also get a plumbing snake to do the job. This tool extends into the drain and manually clears any clogs there. You can get a snake at your local hardware store; always make sure you read the directions carefully before using a snake.

    5. Plumber

Of course, the safest thing to do when you have a clogged drain is to call a plumber. There’s no telling what may have clogged your drain, and trying to operate a snake without expertise could damage your drains. When you call a plumber, you can rest assured that they will know how to clear a blocked drain.
